This is a "freedom medallion". The woman who cut the wood and painted it in front of Miles told him that during the Revolution people commonly wore jewelry like this and that patriots used the medallions to signal other patriots by painting rebel symbols (like 13 points on a leaf). This way freedom fighters could alert each other about meetings with out fear of being caught by the British:
