Trip to the State Capitol

This past Saturday, we went up to the State Capitol to see one of the original Dunlap copies of the Declaration of Independence that was on display. It is a printed copy of the document which actually pre-dates the handwritten copy that has signatures and is on display in Washington D.C. We opted to not stand in the 3 hour line to get up close and personal with the actual document. Instead, the kids took the alternate 1 minute line to stand in front of a giant reproduction that was right next to it. So while we don't have a picture of us in the roped off ring with the actual document, here is a picture of what the kids would look like if they were shrunk down to approximately 6 inches in height and then placed next to the Declaration.

Though we could see the actual document from next to this giant version, we did go up to the balcony and were able to take a shot of the kids "next" to it. You could almost smell the ink from being so close.

I tried to circle the Declaration next to each of the kids' head and even label it in Lily's picture, but I can barely even see the circle I drew. Anyhow, I'm sure you can get a sense of the electricity in the air. But seriously, it was pretty cool to see. We're just sad we couldn't get closer.

I figured that's what it was in the smallish picture. You can click on the small to see a big / original size and it looks good.

Isn't there an urban legend about one of these that had been "found" behind a painting at a garage sale.

Are you sure this one is legit? ;-) *wink
