Miles Goes Under the Knife

This morning Miles went in to get his tonsils and adenoids out. I guess his tonsils were a residual hang-out spot for strep bacterial infections and his adenoids were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Perhaps guilty by association, or just gigantic and the surgeon was beat up by a a pair of adenoids when he was younger and just likes taking revenge whenever possible. I'm sure there's a real reason, but I'll be honest. I don't even know what adenoids are.

Anyway, Miles was a trooper. We went in at 7:45 am and waited for a bit until he was prepped. Though we could tell he was a little nervous, if you didn't know him, you would have thought he was just a happy kid and it was any other day. In the prep/post-op waiting room, they gave him an activity bag with some paper and stickers and a little Hot Wheels car to play with. Then we got him dressed in his surgical gown (I'm hoping the only time in my life I'll ever report that Miles is wearing a "gown", by the way) and special hospital socks that have traction on the bottom, which he loved and got to keep.

He also got to pick out a scented mask to wear to knock him out. It was bubble gum flavor. Afterward he reported that the gas did not smell like bubble gum. He said, "It smelled weird."

They finally came and wheeled into surgery while Beth and I waited in the little post-op room. Beth was a bit nervous because of all the forms listing all the horrible things that could potentially happen. When he came back, everything had gone very smoothly. The only bad thing (aside from some throat pain, which is to be expected because someone put a blade into his mouth and cut some things out of his body) was that his voice was virtually unchanged. Everyone had told Beth Miles would sound like a little Micky Mouse. Not so. But he did get to eat a bunch of popsicles and watch cartoons on the television in our little room. We got to go home shortly after.

So, Miles is doing great and is recovering well. Thank you everyone for all your prayers!

Glad all went well, you were probably told to keep him out a week from school though huh. I think that is one of the best things we have had done with both boys!!! Holden was excited about the flavor of gas he choose as well but he said later it didn't smell like that and I think he started to cry. But they bounce back pretty quickly!!

So scary whenever there is anything medically involved with kids. Glad things went well! I remember getting that done when I was little and being happy despite the soreness because I got a tv, room and peace and quiet to myself for a day and night. Being the oldest kid, that was a rare luxury!

The surgery must have been changed a lot since I went under as a kid. I felt pretty miserable for a while. I'll have to tell you more about it some other time. Glad to hear it was quick and easy for Miles. And I kow how Beth feels. They put Gavin under the knife before we left CO for a minor procedure and it is hard not to sweat it when you can't be around your child during things like that....even when you know there isn't anything that you can do but watch.
